The Begining of our Homeschool Journey

Well seeing as our oldest is almost three we have had to make the decision of whether to do preschool this fall, after a lot of prayer and research my husband and I decided to not take the typical preschool route of a formal curriculum.  We see this age as the opportune time to train our kids in character training and good habit building and between these two we feel like there is enough to learn without the added pressure of school. This is the time to build the foundation that the rest of there education both formal and informal will depend on so we wanted to make an aggressive effort to work on these foundations.

We want to take this year to work on things such as:
  • Scripture memory
  • Chore training
  • Potty training
  • Character development
  • Building a LOVE of books and learning
  • Speech
  • A few of the basics such as Colors, Shapes, and Numbers
  • Building a love of exploring nature and God's creation
  • Habits such as good hygiene
  • Appropriate behavior in Worship
  • and Store etiquette
These are just a few of the things we want to work on developing in our boys this year. This being said I do know I have a tendency to get busy and forget to take advantage of the reoccurring teachable moments of life and so Mark and I decided to do "Before Five in a Row" with the boys. This guide is such a great resource, it provides a classic children's book to read with your child each week this manual also includes Bible memory, discussion questions, and activities to choose from that center on the themes of the book. We feel this relaxed fun approach to learning will provide many teachable moments that we were already hoping to cover. This year should be a fun one and I plan to journal my experience not only through these books and the lessons we learn but also through the planning process as we prep for this fall, so wish me luck and keep reading.
